Women's Health Program at Mass General Brigham (MGB)

Multiple Sclerosis is most commonly diagnosed in the 3rd and 4th decades of life, and 75% of our patients are women. Issues of reproduction and starting a family remain at the forefront of discussions between a patient and a provider. We want to select the most appropriate disease modifying therapy for our patients, yet for those women who plan to become pregnant, special care and consideration need to be taken when deciding on the best and safest treatment options. How to plan for pregnancy considering a diagnosis of chronic neurologic illness? What is the safest time to start a family? What unique aspects of breastfeeding should be considered? Family planning consultations at Partners MS Center, through Women's Health Program, led by Dr. Houtchens, aim to address these and many other questions. We also focus on talking through and managing symptoms of menopausal transition, as well as bladder and bowel dysfunction and sexual function. We help women at any phase of their reproductive cycle to lead a healthy, productive and fulfilling life, with the disease that we cannot yet cure, but have learned to manage and control quite well.

This program is unique and offers a very important service to patients and their families. We encourage you to keep your primary neurologist and to meet with us for a consultation.
